Ill keep it simple. Is there a way I can i have a trial of position anytime I achieve a new rank? I am a clanner and I'm am not ashamed of that fact. So I would like to earn my ranks not only through promotion but also through demonstration of skill. A trial of position doesn't have to be a ritualistic duel but you know it's a nice go to. It can also be a trial by fire or by completing a set challenge. If the unit decides not to go for it I'm more than happy to create self-imposed challenges but I would prefer a superior setting goals for me. Thank you for your time and consideration.
That's part of what the course ribbons are for - for example to get the Brawling ribbon (and thus certify as having completed the brawling course, which you need to advance from Private to Corporal) you have to score two Brawling ticks (not necessarily in the same match), which are awarded for a solo kill within 450m using a medium or heavy mech, while at the same time avoiding dealing team damage (25 or more team damage = the match is not eligible for your ribbon requirements). There's also an advanced brawling ribbon rewarded for meeting similar requirements in Faction Play.
Likewise , the qualification drops for weapons courses (that you need to be promoted to Seargeant) are your opportunity for skill demonstration. Each weapons has "Basic", "Bronze", "Silver" and "Gold" ribbons achieved by dropping with an instructor and scoring damage / assists / kills that add up to a specific points tally.
IS mechs only, primary weapons must match the course subject (that is ballistics / unguided missiles / guided missiles / lasers) and you're forbidden from having more than 15 points worth of alpha from secondary weapon types.
You get 1 point for every 100 damage, 1 for every assist, 2 for every kill and 3 for every KMDD... and -1 for every 5 points of team damage. Bronze is 10 pts, Silver 20, Gold 30). If you want to challenge yourself, talk to the instructor and opt out of being given passing grades on the weapons courses until you get a good enough score to qualify for an actual ribbon (I recommend practicing - certain builds are better at this than others, Silver is doable but Gold takes serious effort).
Other than that, I believe the headcount limits for 1st Battallion companies may eventually lead to placement duels .
