History of the HeadHunter's Phoenix Guard
When the Headhunter's (HH) were transitioning from America Online to Gamestorm, there was a period of turmoil. Many members had been lost and as the HH were reforming on Gamestorm there was a desire to create a unit that was true to the HH traditions, but did not want to presume on the HH name. Hence, under the leadship of Angmar, and leveraging the legend of the phoenix, the bird that arises reborn from its ashes, these former member took the name "Phoenix Guard" (PG). Later, as more former HH joined the members in on the Gamestorm platform and as the ranks expanded via recruiting, the HH was reformed, with the PG being but one battalion within the overall regiment.
The HHPG would join the legend of other HH battalions such as the Grimm Determination and Marlette. Historical Tidbit
The convention for the text portion of a pilots handle and unit designation has not changed much over the years. For example, at the time of the formation of the PG, this was Angmar's in game handle (of course then, in-game communications were all text-based).

In those days, the unit was filled in from the bottom up, so a "battalion" was not officially created until three companies could be fielded.
Eventually the Gamestorm platform also failed. For a brief history of Gamestorm see this. Gamestorm was owned by Kesmai, but bought out and shut down by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2001, which is why many HH pilots do not care for EA. With the demise of Gamestorm, the HH temporarily played Tanurus, a tank-based game while waiting for the development of new mech-based games. Tanurus information can be found here. At this time the PG and other HH battalions were de-commissioned.
While many HH played various MechWarrior-based games such as the Microsoft developed titles (MW2, MW3, MW4) and the Inner Sphere Wars (ISW), the PG was not re-commissioned until Mechwarrior online was created and the expanding recruitment of the HH re-established this unit within the HH.
As unit membership once more went into decline, some HH units were consolidated. Some members of the existing HHPG decided to leave the HH proper. This unit within the HH has been temporarily moth-balled, but may once more rise from its ashes, should the HH feel it needs to be re-staffed.
